A construction worker on a construction site in South Australia is building a new river bridge between the city of Galio and the town of Sturgis.
The new bridge is part of a $3.2 billion $1.2 million construction project that is part a plan to build a new metro rail line connecting the South Australian city of Storrs and the South Australia capital of Adelaide.
Mr John Grim Dawn, a regional manager with the Australian Building and Construction Commission, says the new bridge will be able to carry a train to and from Sturgise’s downtown.
He says the project is expected to create about 1,500 construction jobs.
“We are hoping it will be worth the money,” Mr Grim Dawn said.
“It will be a fantastic job for the community and a great thing for the local economy.”
Mr Grim said the construction work had been under way for more than a year.
“The new bridge project is part and parcel of our $1 billion South Australian metro rail project which we are building at the same time,” he said.
Mr Grim added that the bridge would be able travel at a maximum speed of 35kmh (19 miles per hour) which was far faster than the metro rail trains currently run.
The metro rail will run on the existing Adelaide-Port Augusta railway line between Adelaide and the port city of Port Augusta.
The project is set to start construction this year.
